How to Build Your Skincare Routine – Morning and Evening
The secret to beautiful skin doesn't lie in expensive creams or complicated 12-step routines, but in understanding your skin's needs and using the right ingredients at the right time. We've gathered everything you need to know to create your own tailored skincare routine that delivers visible results.
Morning
Morning care is about waking up the skin, providing moisture, and protecting it from the day's challenges – sun, pollution, and dehydration.
Start with a mild cleanse
Even if you've cleansed your skin thoroughly in the evening, it can make sense to start the day with a light cleanse. A mild, gentle cleanser or even just water is enough for many skin types. It removes the night's sebum and sweat, leaving you with a fresh surface to work on.
Active ingredients and serum
Now it's time to give your skin a little extra care. Water-based serums with active ingredients are easily absorbed and work targeted:
Vitamin C: Perfect for morning use as it protects against free radicals and pollution. Also provides a more even skin tone and more radiance.
Hyaluronic Acid: Hydrates deeply and plumps up the skin. Best applied to slightly damp skin.
Niacinamide: Balances sebum production and reduces redness. Can be used by almost all skin types.
Peptides: Supports skin elasticity and provides calm.
Most of these ingredients can easily be used together. For example, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide work excellently in combination.
Exfoliation – but not every day
A mild AHA or BHA acid a couple of times a week can do wonders for radiance and skin texture. Two to three times a week is ample for most, and if you have sensitive skin, it's better to save acids for the evening – or skip them altogether.
Lock in moisture with a good cream
A light but nourishing moisturizer keeps the skin soft and thoroughly hydrated all day. Look for ingredients like ceramides and peptides that strengthen the skin's natural barrier.
SPF – the absolute most important step
Whether the sun is shining or not: Sun protection is indispensable. Especially if you use acids or retinol, which make the skin more sensitive. SPF is the most important anti-aging product you can use. Go for at least SPF 30, and remember to reapply if you are outdoors a lot.
Evening Routine: Cleanse, Repair, and Rebuild
Evening is when the skin gets rest – and when more potent ingredients are allowed to work. Here, it's about cleansing away the day and giving the skin something to rebuild itself with.
Thorough cleanse – but adapted to the skin's needs
How thorough your cleanse needs to be depends on what your skin has been exposed to during the day:
For makeup, waterproof sunscreen, or very oily skin:
Here, double cleansing is a good idea. Start with an oil-based cleanser that effectively dissolves makeup and waterproof sunscreen. Follow up with a water-based cleanser to remove all residues.
For minimal or no makeup:
A single, thorough cleanse with a mild product is often sufficient. Choose a cleansing gel, milk, or foam that suits your skin type.
Treatment products – choose your focus
Evening is ideal for slightly stronger products. Here it depends on what the skin needs.
Retinol should be used with respect. Start slowly, on dry skin, and avoid combining with acids and Vitamin C on the same evening. Begin with retinol once a week, and gradually increase. Many experience an adjustment period with slight flaking and redness. This is normal, but stop if irritation becomes too severe.
Exfoliation with AHA/BHA can be used a couple of times a week, but never on the same evening as retinol.
Niacinamide is stable and versatile – it plays well with both moisturizing ingredients and can be used on "off-nights" from retinol.
Hyaluronic acid can be applied to slightly damp skin after cleansing to bind moisture in the skin.
Finish with a nourishing cream
A good night cream works wonders. It can be a little richer than the day cream – especially if the skin has received active ingredients. Night cream locks in moisture and supports the skin's natural repair processes, which primarily occur at night.
Good advice for your skincare routine
- Introduce new products gradually – one at a time with at least a week apart.
- Perform a patch test first to avoid skin reactions.
- Listen to your skin – redness, irritation, and increased sensitivity are signs that you should reduce active ingredients.
- Be patient – skincare doesn't work overnight, give products 4-8 weeks to show results.
- Consistency is key – even the best routine only works if you follow it regularly.
With these tips, you are well on your way to a skincare routine that is both effective and gentle. Remember, the perfect routine is the one that suits your skin – not the one with the most steps or most expensive products.
